“Democracy values everyone equally, even if the majority do not”. Baroness (Brenda) Hale, former President of the UK Supreme Court, and Robert Spano, former President of the European Court of Human Rights, discuss the role of human rights law in preserving democracy from authoritarianism in fragile and uncertain times.
Speakers
Baroness (Brenda) Hale was the only woman on the judicial committee of the House of Lords from 2004-2009, the first woman on the UK Supreme Court from 2009-2020, and its first female President from 2017-2020. She is an Honorary Fellow of Mansfield College, Oxford.
Robert Spano is the former President of the European Court of Human Rights where he served as a Judge from 2013-2022. He is currently a Partner in the London Office of the multinational law firm of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, a Visiting Professor of Law at the University of Oxford, a Visiting Fellow of Mansfield College, Oxford, and the Bonavero Institute of Human Rights, as well as Professor of Law, University of Iceland.
