DPhil BAME Scholarship

Merton College and Faculty of Law

The Faculty of Law, and Merton College, are committed to attracting the very best candidates for research degrees, irrespective of their background or ability to pay. Students from Black and Minority Ethnic (BAME) backgrounds who are ordinarily resident in the UK have been under-represented in our doctoral programmes in recent years and this scholarship is one is one of several initiatives that the University is undertaking to address that situation, as part of its Race Equality Charter, and is a positive action measure under s.158 of the Equality Act 2010.

The scholarship will provide full fees and maintenance support for a maximum of three years and is provided jointly by the Faculty of Law and Merton College.

Eligibility

Eligibility is restricted to candidates who are members of Black and Minority Ethnic (BAME) groups (as defined by the Office for National Statistics[1]), who are ordinarily resident in the UK (and thus liable for ‘home’ fees)[2], and who have completed the Law Faculty needs-assessment form (see ‘How to apply’ for further details).

Terms and conditions

The scholarship will cover all tuition fees and provide a grant for living expenses at UK Research Council rates (£17,668 [3] at 2022-23 rates). Awards are made for up to three years of study for the DPhil, subject to satisfactory academic performance. The successful candidate will become a member of Merton College.

How to apply

Applicants must apply to the University of Oxford for admission to a DPhil degree in Law by the relevant January deadline.

Once application decisions have been made, those offered places on the DPhil programme will be invited to apply for the scholarship, which will involve the completion of a form confirming that they meet the eligibility criteria; and completion of a form setting out their financial means in common with all candidates applying for our means-tested awards.
