Coach for Herbert Smith Freehills Competition Law Moot

The Faculty of Law is seeking to appoint a coach to advise and support Oxford team competing in the Herbert Smith Freehills Competition Law Moot (London).

The responsibilities of the coach include but are not limited to:
•    providing the team with general instruction on the basics of international law, competition law, EU law, research sources, and methods;
•    providing general advice on memorial writing and oral advocacy techniques;
•    organising and recruiting judges for participation in practice moots;
•    managing the moot budget;
•    supporting the team through all stages of the competition; and
•    other organisational and administrative responsibilities for participation in the competition.

Duration and hours 

Working hours: a total of up to 50 hours across the duration of the project, to be agreed with the project supervisor.

Start date: 10 February 2025

Date by which the work must be completed: 15 June 2025

Reporting

The coach will report to either the Law Faculty’s Mooting Officer or, on their delegation, to the Graduate Mooting Assistant.

Requirements

•    A strong interest in competition law is essential.
•    Experience in mooting and excellent organisational and communication skills are desirable. 
•    The work will require the Moot Coach to be present in-person in Oxford. Meetings with the Mooting Officers will be held in Oxford.

Eligibility

This role is open to current graduate students (with a background in law) in the University of Oxford and the hours are in line with the restrictions on working hours for students at the Faculty of Law.
It is expected that the work will be undertaken in the UK.  

Rate of Pay

The work will be paid at £18.43 per hour, which equates to University Grade 6, point 1, on the basis of completed and approved timesheets, which must be submitted to payroll@law.ox.ac.uk  by the last Friday of each calendar month for payment on the last working day of the following month.

Guidelines for Faculty members, line managers and students

Work must not commence without a letter of engagement or variable hours contract and a right to work check having been carried out by the Faculty Personnel Officer.

Graduate student engagement opportunities in the Faculty of Law usually fall into one of three categories: Research Assistants  , Graduate Teaching Assistantship Blog Editorships.

The University Paid Work Guidelines for Oxford Graduate Students  recommends that full-time graduate research students ensure that any paid work should still allow them to spend at least 40 hours per week for a minimum 44 weeks of the year on their studies. Full-time graduate taught students are recommended not to undertake more than 8 hours’ paid work each week during term-time study periods.  There are additional rules for student with visas  wishing to undertake paid work.  
 
Students may not work for their own supervisor without the approval of the Associate Dean for Graduate Students.
