Call for Coach - Willem C. Vis Moot

The Faculty of Law is seeking to appoint a coach to advise and support Oxford team competing in the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot (Vienna):  deadline: 12pm 5 November 2024.

The responsibilities of the coach include but are not limited to:

  • providing the team with general instruction on the basics of arbitration and international contract law, research sources, and methods;
  • providing general advice on memorial writing and oral advocacy techniques;
  • organising and recruiting judges for participation in practice moots;
  • managing the moot budget;
  • supporting the team through all stages of the competition; and
  • other organisational and administrative responsibilities for participation in the competition.

 Duration and Hours

Working hours: a total of 53 hours across the duration of the project, to be agreed with the supervising Mooting Officers.

Start date: 8th November 2024

Date by which the work must be completed: 30 June 2025

 Reporting

The coaches will report to either Prof. Thomas Krebs (the Law Faculty’s Mooting Officer) or, on his delegation, to me.

 Requirements

  • A strong interest in arbitration and contract law is essential.
  • Experience in mooting and excellent organisational and communication skills are desirable.
  • The work will require the Moot Coach to be present in-person in Oxford. Meetings with the Mooting Officers will be held in Oxford.

Rate of Pay

The work will be paid at £17.02 per hour, on the basis of completed and approved timesheets, which must be submitted to payroll@law.ox.ac.uk by the last Friday of each calendar month for payment on the last working day of the following month.

In addition, annual leave will be assumed to be taken in the month in which it was accrued.

Eligibility

This role is open to current graduate students (with a background in law) in the University of Oxford and the hours are in line with the restrictions on working hours for students at the Faculty of Law.

It is expected that the work will be undertaken in the UK.

Guidelines for Faculty members, line managers and students

Work must not commence without a letter of engagement or variable hours contract and a right to work check having been carried out by the Faculty Personnel Officer.

Full-time graduate students in the Faculty of Law may work up to 8 hours per week, or a common sense average across the year, regardless of the type of work.

Students may not work as Research Assistants for their own supervisor without the approval of the Associate Dean for Graduate Students.
