In April 2023, Professor Sir Basil Markesinis KC FBA, died and we lost not only an outstanding scholar of international renown but a remarkable and dynamic man, passionate and driven, deeply committed to the study and teaching of law, particularly comparative law, and about building institutions to further that cause.

At the University of Oxford we are particularly lucky to enjoy the fruit of one particular labour, the creation of what is now the Institute of European and Comparative Law, as a crossroads for ideas and people. More about Basil Markesinis can be found in a selection of tributes paid on his death.

Teaching and research were two of Basil’s greatest interests. He took teaching all students seriously, not just in Oxford during his years in post, but all over the world, as part of a wider mission to elevate the standard and scope of legal thinking. A man with many heritages, his formative years in Greece, his deep affinity for the United Kingdom, and his close connections across France, Germany, the USA and beyond meant it is hardly surprising that his legacy is shared by many people and places around the world.

In celebration and continuation of Basil's teaching and research, the Basil Markesinis Memorial Fund will support the study and teaching of comparative law, particularly in Oxford. The ultimate aim is to support a post in Basil's name, with support for exchanges and visits to further comparative law projects as a second stream for the resources.
