2025 Oxford Media Policy Summer Institute

Jesus College, Oxford - July 28- August 8, 2025

The 2025 Oxford Media Policy Summer Institute comes at a critical moment.  Today’s international system faces unprecedented challenges including fragmentation and new modes of ordering with significant implications for media and communications technologies.  The future of media development is uncertain, fact-checking and content moderation efforts are being undermined, and inequalities are deepening.  Join us in Oxford for two weeks as we engage speakers and participants from around the world to debate rapidly changing current events.  From the politics of AI policymaking across the global south, to the approach of Big Tech- from the US to China- towards global markets, and the erosion of ethics and responsibility in AI, we will also explore efforts of resistance emerging from Africa and alternative ways of fostering inclusion and reimaginging a shared future.  In the context of continuing global conflicts and intersected crises, we will also explore some of the ideological underpinnings that appear to be infusing some of the sweeping shifts we are witnessing, including questions around the role of the state, law (or non-law), and values.

Our approach is decidedly global, with an emphasis on the global south. We will also use our vantage point from the UK to discuss leading issues in the EU and engage with local actors, including Ofcom, the BBC, and the European Commission.  As with Summer Institutes in the past, we will have speakers from across Oxford and prominent guests from policy, government and the private sector. One of the most exciting aspects of the Summer Institute is the vibrant and engaged group of participants and the lasting networks of solidarity and collaboration created.

For over two decades, the Oxford Media Policy Summer Institute has built a dynamic cohort of alumni worldwide. It promises to be an engaging and vibrant two weeks, with the opportunity to reflect, step back from your work, and engage with new perspectives and ideas from around the world. Join us during these unprecedented times to discuss pressing issues of global media policy over breakfast, during seminars, and on long walks through the Oxford countryside!

Please get in touch with us if you have any questions at pcmlp@csls.ox.ac.uk
