Applications for 2024 have now closed.

The Bonavero Institute Summer Fellowship at JUSTICE, is an eight-week internship, tenable from early July to late September 2024.

About JUSTICE

JUSTICE is an all-party law reform and human rights organisation working to strengthen the justice system – administrative, civil and criminal – in the United Kingdom. Our vision is of fair, accessible and efficient legal processes, in which the individual's rights are protected, and which reflect the country's international reputation for upholding and promoting the rule of law. We are a membership organisation, largely comprised of legal professionals.

About the internship at JUSTICE

The successful applicant will work closely with our legal staff: conducting legal research; providing commentary on draft legislation; assisting with third party interventions; and supporting working parties of our membership exploring critical issues of law reform. The internship will provide the opportunity to develop research and drafting skills, to engage with litigation and law-making processes, and to be part of a small, friendly and committed staff. Applicants should demonstrate an interest in the challenges affecting the justice system – whether criminal, civil, family or administrative – and have an understanding of the UK’s constitutional and human rights framework. They should have excellent written and spoken communication skills.

"I will be forever grateful for my Bonavero Institute Summer Fellowship at JUSTICE. I gained an invaluable insight into areas of desperate need for reform, and how our legal institutions and processes can be strengthened. JUSTICE do this mainly through working parties, consultation responses and briefings, and third party interventions. I was lucky enough to be involved in all three methods during my fellowship. I worked on When Things Go Wrong, a working party that is looking to reform the law surrounding public inquiries and inquests, to make it more just for the victims and families involved. This was especially fulfilling in light of the personal commitment I felt towards addressing criticisms levelled at the handling of the Grenfell disaster and the Chilcot Inquiry. I drafted responses to government consultations, such as on Knife Crime Prevention Orders, and researched for a possible third-party intervention in case of the century: the Miller No. 2 prorogation case. Aside from the substantive work, I also benefitted from the social dynamic of the office, which included weekly Yoga sessions and daily discussions on the law. Everyone was extremely friendly and warm. The lawyers and my supervisor took a keen interest in developing my skills and career prospects. If you are passionate about justice, then JUSTICE is the fellowship for you!"  -  2020 JUSTICE Intern Aymen Ati
