How to apply for the Oxford Media Policy Summer Institute
Discussion Group in the Jesus College Quad

The applications are now open! To apply for the Summer Institute, you need to fill out the application form that asks you to provide basic information on your background, current position, and research/professional interests. We are particularly keen to hear about the topics that interest and excite you! You will also be asked to submit a CV, a short statement of interest, and one writing sample.

Participants come from a wide range of backgrounds and are often regulators, early and mid-career academics and researchers, lawyers, postgraduate and law students, media professionals, technologists, people working for technology companies or civil society organisations. One of the exciting things about the Institute is the diversity of backgrounds and experiences of the participants!

Who should I put as a contact for my References?

We ask for the names of two potential referees on the application form.  We will only contact them, with your permission, if we have further questions about your application and expertise. Your referees should be people who are familiar with your work or research and who can provide an insight into your academic ability, leadership, professional achievements and/or research interests. They should be able to comment on your suitability for this particular programme.

How are the Applications Assessed?

Particpants are selected by the course convenors.  Care is taken to ensure a balanced cohort (including diversity of background, experience, geographical representation, etc).  The programme is highly competitive with hundreds of applications - if you are not accepted this year, do try again!  Sometimes we receive many applications focused on a particular topic or with a particular expertise, and we have to be careful to ensure a range of participants.

When is the Application Deadline?

There are usually two application deadlines. The first, for Early Decision and applicants who require visa for the UK, is on March 21st. The final deadline is on April 25th.

How and when will I be notified of the outcome of my application?

Applicants will be notified of acceptance by email by the first week in May at the latest. For applicants who apply before the first deadline, we will aim to contact you earlier. If you need an earlier decision due to summer planning deadlines, please submit your application as soon as possible and indicate your need for a faster response on the application form.

Fees

The tuition fee for the 2025 Oxford Summer Institute is £2,100, including a deposit of £600 payable on acceptance of a place. The total cost of the Institute will depend on your personal travel costs to the UK and the type of accommodation you choose.

Further information on accommodation and on the payment process will be provided to accepted applicants.

Funding

Applicants are encouraged to seek funding from their institutions, organisations or alternative sources (employers, foundations, government funders).

A small number of full and partial tuition fee waivers are available for outstanding applicants from institutions in middle and low income countries.

Please note that these scholarships are highly competitive. You will have the opportunity to indicate on the application form if you wish to be considered for these. For applicants who have potential sources of funding, there is an option on the application form to apply for a scholarship with a note that you may be able to secure external funding. We are also happy to provide letters of support for accepted applicants.
