Copyright and Use of Images
It is important that we use only images flagged as ‘free for non-commercial use’ (or something similarly explicit that makes it clear that there is no requirement to pay a fee for use here).
Retrospective fees for unauthorised use of images can be punishingly high, and are generally not preceded by an invitation to remove the offending item to avoid paying.
All Creative Commons Licenses permit such non-commercial use. Some require that the image is not changed in any way. Most require the display of a credit to the creator, which at the moment can only be done on our site by using the caption field.
If you have a specific reason and the budget to use a licensed image, please contact Law Communications.
NB. You may come across the term, ‘Royalty free’. This does not mean there is nothing to pay. Royalties are a specific payment mechanism, and there may still be a one-off licence fee.
