Opinion research on the death penalty
Indonesia: Carolyn Hoyle and the DPP worked with the Indonesian NGO LBH Masyarakat to conduct opinion research on the death penalty. They published a feasibility study in 2018, before publishing a two-part report, titled Investigating Attitudes to the Death Penalty in Indonesia, in June 2021. Part one of the report concerned the views of opinion formers, while the second focused on public opinion.
Malaysia: Roger Hood carried out research on public opinion on the mandatory death penalty in Malaysia for the DPP, published in the report The Death Penalty in Malaysia (2013).
Taiwan: Roger Hood worked with a Taiwanese professor, Chiu Hei-Yuan, on a report for the DPP on public opinion on the death penalty in Taiwan, For or Against the Death Penalty: Evidence from Taiwan (2019). This work was supported by the NGO, Taiwan Alliance to End the Death Penalty. In 2022, this was followed by the publication of a further report on Taiwan, authored by Carolyn Hoyle and Professor Shiow-duan Hawang, Legislators' Opinions on the Death Penalty in Taiwan.
Zimbabwe: Carolyn Hoyle carried out research into the views of opinion leaders in Zimbabwe, in partnership with the Zimbabwean NGO Veritas. This was published in the report Time to Abolish the Death Penalty in Zimbabwe: Exploring the Views of its Opinion Leaders (2020).
Eastern Carribean and Barbados: Roger Hood and Florence Seemungal conducted research into the views of opinion formers in six countries in the Eastern Caribbean (Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, and St Vincent and the Grenadines) and Barbados, published in the report Sentenced to death without execution (2020).
Comparative work: Roger Hood published a comparative study of public opinion research in the Berkeley Journal of Criminal Law, 'Is Public Opinion a Justifiable Reason Not to Abolish the Death Penalty?'
