People often tell me that my job as an environmental law scholar is to save the world. But law cannot save the world alone. Robust legal architectures can contribute, however. Those architectures are not the sole province of environmental lawyers, but of all lawyers and their legal imagination. Over fifty years ago, national governments passed ambitious environmental legislation that expanded the public law imagination. These regimes transformed law and legal thinking. By illuminating and evaluating this legal past, sense can be made of legal futures and how best to foster legal imagination in the era of the Anthropocene.
