The Criminology DPhil Discussion group is a space for doctoral students to discuss issues relevant to the successful completion of their DPhil and a potential subsequent career in academia. We get speakers from the Centre for Criminology as well as from outside the Faculty to talk about the DPhil milestones (Transfer and Confirmation of Status, final viva), ethical questions, fieldwork, and career development.
For the current academic year, the discussion group will meet on Thursday's of the even weeks of term. Normally, we invite a speaker from the Centre for Criminology - sometimes also an external speaker - who would present for about 20 minutes, followed by a Q+A or discussion session. Topics in the past have included CUREC, Transfer of Status, Confirmation of Status, dealing with imposter syndrome, navigating access to the field, and exiting the field ethically. The DPhil discussion group is a resource for DPhils and exists to help with issues that DPhils commonly encounter in their research. We, therefore, welcome any suggestions for topics that you would find helpful to discuss!
For Michaelmas Term 2024, we are in the process of devising a term card, with potential sessions on the Transfer of Status, available funding for DPhils within the Law Faculty (for the DPhil, postdoc, and conferences), academic publishing, and applying for and speaking at conferences.
