The Law Faculty Annual Teaching Return

Deadline: Friday 28th June 2024

The Law Faculty operates an Annual Teaching Return for academic postholders (i.e. those with a contractual teaching obligation).

*New in 2024*: Convernors are asked to provide information about Additional Teaching given this year

The Teaching Administration System is now open for you to report your Faculty teaching and supervision for 2023-24.

If you can't find your record on the system, please contact web.support@law.ox.ac.uk.

Any postholder due payment for over stint BCL/MJur teaching must complete their return by Friday 28th June.  Teaching returns can be submitted after this date, but over-stint payments can not be processed for teaching returns submitted after this deadline.

The key features of the Annual Teaching Return system are:

Stint units

  • You can check your (university) teaching stint for the current academic year, and see the adjustments made to take account of all known leave, buyouts and remission. Please report any issues relating to stint adjustment to web.support@law.ox.ac.uk
  • The system already holds information about any Faculty Officer roles you hold, that may have an impact on your stint (depending on how you have used your allowances). Please double check your stint if you have any remission relating to a research grant, as this may not have been captured.

Teaching

Please enter all of your Faculty teaching.  This includes all BCL/MJur tutorials (including additional tutorials that are the result of a tutorial buyout); and any Jurisprudence mini-option teaching that you wish to count against your Faculty stint.

If you are in doubt about what you can count against stint, please refer to what can be counted against your Faculty teaching stint (SSO required).

If you did something that is approved to count against stint but you can’t work out how to enter it, please e-mail web.support@law.ox.ac.uk.

Some tips on filling in the form:

  • If most of your teaching hasn’t changed much from last year, you can copy it all over from last year at the push of a button.
  • You can also easily copy one individual entry, which is useful if most of the information you're entering applies to two different terms, for example.
  • Different teaching delivery methods for seminars can be recorded in the same entry - add a second seminar entry by clicking “Add second seminar entry”.  Use this if some seminars within the same subject course were delivered in a different format or by a different number of people (e.g. 4 seminars shared between 2 leaders and 4 given by one person alone can now be recorded on the same entry).
  • As you enter your teaching, the system automatically calculates the stint value of different types of teaching for you.
  • You should indicate repeat sessions with our new tick box for this purpose (i.e. if you’ve taught the same seminar twice)
  • You are asked to indicate whether any of your teaching was not given face-to-face, and if not, why not.
  • If you need to make further changes to any teaching entries after you have pressed the 'complete' button, you can, but you will need to go in to edit them individually.

Supervision

  • You can see the record we hold of the supervision you’ve done this year (taken from eVision) - so please contact Geraldine Malloy if you notice any problems.
  • You can opt to count this supervision against your stint, or not.  (Doing so increases your overall stint obligation – see our page on stint obligation for more information – section b)
  • If you have any queries about what you can see in this section, please refer them to Catherine Donaldson via web.support@law.ox.ac.uk in the first instance.

Changes in 2024 (for reporting on the 2023-24 academic year)

  • Course/option convenors are asked to add a return for contact hours delivered by additional teachers.
  • An option for recording the mentoring of postdoctoral researchers has been added (12 units per year, if you are formally appointed to this role by the Faculty for British Academy of Leverhulme.

Review and submit return

  • You can view the summary reports at any time.
  • When you’ve finished entering your teaching and checked it, please submit your return by pressing the Big Green Button at the end.

Summary

  • After you have completed your return, you will be able to view and/or download a summary, for you to check or keep for your own records.
  • You will automatically be paid at the standard Faculty rate for any BCL/MJur tutorials that you have taught over stint, provided you have completed and submitted your teaching return by the date mentioned at the top of this page.

What else you can see

  • Check your Teaching Group membership(s).
  • Check your Research Group membership(s).
  • Add notes or further information – for example any reasons why you might be over or under stint, such as sickness absence, strike action, remission due to a research grant, etc.  You can also use this space to tell us about major college or university roles.

Your completed return will be reviewed by the Dean and Vice Dean later in the summer, and we may contact you to discuss your return in more detail if we have any concerns.
