International Rounds 2019

The 2019 International Rounds of the 12thannual Price Media Law Moot Court Competition took place in Oxford, England on 8 – 12 April 2019.

This year we had 36 teams representing a diverse range of countries (including  Albania, Bangladesh, China, Egypt, France, Hungary, Iran, Latvia, Lebanon, Palestine, Philippines, South Africa, USA, Zimbabwe etc) argued a complex Competition Case on free speech, privacy and the regulation of social media before distinguished benches of lawyers, academics and practitioners from the media industry serving as judges. The quality of arguments was extraordinary. Competition culminated with the team from the University of Philippines prevailing over the team from National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy in the final. The Final Bench comprised of former and sitting judges from international and domestic courts : Nicolas Bratza (European Court of Human Rights, retired), Nona Tsotsoria (European Court of Human Rights, 2008 – 2018), Peter Sam Shivute (Supreme Court of Namibia), Kate O’Regan (South African Constitutional Court 1994-2009).

During the week we have organised following events around the Moot. Prof Kate O’Regan and Dr Steafan Theil  kicked off on Day 1 with panel discussion: Hate Speech Online: What is being done about it?; followed by Sarah Phillimore and a mooting masterclass for the participants; Max Slackman from Instagram hosted a Q&A session; and Monroe E. Price gave 1stAnnual Eric Barendt Law Lecture: the mistery of regulationg social media. There were two additional special events that allowed participants to speak with the author of the Case and Bench Memorandum Gehan Gunatilleke and well as have an informal discussion with the Final Bench judges.

As always we publish the Brochure for the International Rounds 2019 as a special edition, with all relevant information from last year, that can be found here: International Rounds 2019 Brochure and more photos are available on our Facebook page here.
