Kara Apland
Biography
Kara Apland is a part-time DPhil candidate at the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies. Her research focuses on the regulation of adolescent sexuality in contemporary Sri Lanka. It seeks to reflect on the social function of Sri Lanka’s child protection and juvenile justice systems, through exploring the context and circumstances surrounding children’s institutionalisation, including in cases involving sexual encounters and behaviours.
Kara has over ten years of experience working in applied research in international development, specialising in child protection. She has undertaken numerous social research projects, evaluations and analyses of law and policy for UN agencies, Governments and NGOs, and has experience working in over 20 countries.
Kara holds an MSc in Human Rights Law and Sociology from the London School of Economics and a BA in Political Science from Brown University. She has completed research fellowships from Brown University and Yale Law School, and a Fulbright Scholarship at the London School of Economics and Political Science.
