Biography

I have taught at, and been an associate of, a variety of universities in Africa (University of Legon, Ghana; University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania) and in the UK (University of Sussex, Queen’s University of Belfast, University of Wales, Swansea). At present I am an Emeritus Reader in the Department of Anthropology, SOAS. My specialisms have included the Anthropology of Development, ethnography of Eastern Africa, the anthropology of law, and research methods. I also have extensive development-related experience as a consultant for international development agencies for whom I worked in Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania and Botswana. My recent publications include two monographs on refugee law (one of which is an ethnography of the British asylum system) and multiple papers on different aspects of asylum and immigration law and practice, on migration, statelessness and ‘secret trials’. I am currently writing up a book manuscript based on fieldwork in magistrate’s courts in London which examines the quality of justice on offer in first tier criminal courts.
