ExpLaw Summer Programme Ambassadors x5

The Law Admissions and Outreach Officer, Emma White is looking for 5 ExpLaw Ambassadors for the 2-day residential ExpLaw summer programme in Oxford. Each ambassador will work 30th July & 31st July during the day, and will also be on call during the night of either 29th July or 30th July.

ExpLaw summer programme is organised by the Faculty of Law and is supported by the Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer. The aim of the summer programme is to provide academically talented students from UK state schools with the opportunity to experience the University of Oxford and learn about the study of law. Participants have been selected according to academic merit and a variety of socio-economic factors. During the 2-day summer programme, participants will take part in a range of legal lectures and discussions, information about admissions and studying law at Oxford, and visit a selection of Oxford colleges. A social activity will also be provided on the evening of 30th July.

The role of the ExpLaw Ambassador is to greet, help and support the summer programme participants during their stay in Oxford. Please note the role can also include being on call at night, as well as evening duties to greet early arrivals at St Hilda’s College. On 30th July the evening shift Ambassadors will meet the main cohort of participants at a pre-arranged time and location to welcome them to the Programme and facilitate introductions.

In more details, the role will include:

  • Act as a positive role model to prospective students of the University.
  • Communicate effectively and clearly to participants and to staff, in a professional manner at all times, reflecting guidance provided in training.
  • Act in a pastoral role to participants, providing support and guidance about the University and the summer school.
  • Accompany students on all summer school events (both academic and social) and meals.
  • Act as initial contact for any overnight issues that participants experience. To either deal with these issues or elevate to accommodation lodge staff.
  • Monitor student behaviour overnight- e.g. by ensuring students go to bed at a reasonable time and to intervene in instances of excessive noise.
  • Follow Health and Safety, Risk Assessment and Safeguarding Children procedures (which will be part of training) and record and report incidents appropriately.
  • Be reliable and punctual. To arrive to each event within the summer school in good time and to ensure punctuality of summer school participants where appropriate.
  • Manage behaviour and encourage engagement of summer school participants. To pass any concerns about behaviour or engagement on to Law Faculty Staff.
  • Keep confidential information about participants secure at all times.
  • Attend all training required for the position- payment for training is included in gross salary.
  • Perform all other duties as requested by Law Faculty staff.

Duration and hours

The main ExpLaw Summer Programme will take place on 30th & 31st July, with ‘Early Birds’ arriving at St Hilda’s College the evening of 29th July.

Monday 29th July

5pm – 11pm

2 Ambassadors on evening duty, greet early arrivals.

Tuesday 30th July

8am – 10pm

3 Ambassadors on evening duty.

Wednesday 31st July

8am – 4pm

5 Ambassadors throughout the day

Plus ‘on call’ night staff duties on one of the following nights: 29th July / 30th July

 

Ambassadors available on call from 10pm – 8am

 

Summary of hours:

2 Ambassadors working 29th July – 31st July = 21 hrs

3 Ambassadors working 30th July – 31st July = 15 hrs

Plus any hours worked when 'on call' for example where a student is suffering with home sickness and the Ambassadors stays up to settle them, these hours should be recorded on the Ambassadors timesheet.

Accommodation / Food / Expenses

All student ambassadors will be provided with free accommodation at St Hilda’s College on the night of Tuesday 30th July. The two Ambassadors providing night duties will also receive free accommodation on the additional night worked on 29th July.

All meals will be provided and will be taken with summer school participants.

The Faculty of Law will reimburse ambassadors for reasonable travel expenses to and from the summer programme if not located in Oxford. Ambassadors should purchase their own tickets and will be required to claim reimbursement taxable benefits claim form. Ambassadors should make use of any practical measures which reduce ticket price, for example advance booking and use of a 16-25 railcard (if applicable).

The ExpLaw Ambassadors will report to Emma White (Admissions and Outreach Officer)

Requirements

Your application should explain how you satisfy most, if not all, of the following essential criteria:

  • Currently studying for a degree at the University of Oxford, Faculty of Law. (This includes third and fourth years who will have completed their degree by July.)
  • Proven interest in access work.
  • Experience working with young people.
  • Confident verbal communicator.
  • Well organised and punctual.
  • Practical problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrable capacity to work effectively in a team.
  • Ability to represent the University of Oxford and to give advice on applications, admissions and student life in an encouraging and helpful manner.
  • Physical and emotional resilience to cope with challenges and pressures of a residential programme.
  • Completed Safeguarding training, or willing to undertake online training (OSCB)
  • Experience of the LNAT and answering student Q&As

And the following desirable criteria:

  • Experience working in an ambassadorial/outreach role for the University or one if its colleges or departments.
  • Experience working at or participating in a residential programme.
  • Former participant of an access programme such as the UNIQ summer schools or Pathways to Law.
  • Experience supporting young people in a welfare role, dealing with issues such as nervousness and homesickness.
  • First Aid trained

Your normal place of work will be St Cross Building or Manor Road Building, Manor Road.

Eligibility

This opportunity is open to current undergraduate students in the Faculty of Law, and students are expected to obtain the permission of their college, if required.

Rate of Pay

The work will be paid at £12.49 per hour, which equates to University Grade 3, point 1, on the basis of completed and approved timesheets, which must be submitted to payroll@law.ox.ac.uk by the last Friday of each calendar month for payment on the last working day of the following month.

In addition, paid annual leave will be assumed to be taken in the month in which it was accrued.

Full-time graduate students in the Faculty of Law may work up to 8 hours per week, or a common sense average across the year, regardless of the type of work.

Students may not work for their own supervisor without the approval of the Associate Dean for Graduate Students.
